E-Journals Mini-Media Choice Projects

Due 10/23 (your choice 1 of 4 projects: Online Communities, Podcasting, Online Help, or E-Journals)

Worth 5% of your final grade.

Turn in on paper.

Purpose: To become familiar with E-Journals and professional academic publications and to analyze E-Journals as a method of electronic publishing and writing.

Recommended for: This Mini-Media Choice Project is recommend especially for those interested in pursuing a career in academia, and also for those interested in writing and publishing from the professional prospective. It is also good for those interested in journalism.

For this project you will need to spend at least 2 hours checking out and reading various articles in the e-journal of your choice--see list below or feel free to find another (you will need to run any others by me first to make sure it is a professional legitimate peer-reviewed journal (email me by 10/16 to get approval for another option)). Once you have spent at least two hours reading the e-journal, write a paper analyzing the particular e-journal you read and the genre of e-journals in general. If you choose to use the same e-journal that you used for the reading on 10/9 please peruse at least one other e-journal to get a feel for some of the differences. In your analysis of the e-journal discuss the following questions.

Questions about the e-journal in particular:
-What e-journal did you read?
-Would this e-journal be classified as a natural hypertext journal or linear text (with or without links) e-journal? Why?
-What things did you particularly like or dislike about the e-journal? How easy/not easy did you find it to read?
-What did you think about the navigational methods of the e-journal? How easy or hard is it to find things in the e-journal?
-What did you think of the article you read? Which articles were they?
-Who do you think the audience is? What do you think the purpose is?

Questions about e-journals in general:
-After exploring at least two different e-journals, what do you think of e-journals as a genre?
-How do the two e-journals compare to each other? How do they compare to print journals?
-Will you read an e-journal again?
-Why type of e-journal do you prefer or see the most value in: natural hypertext journal or linear text (with or without links) e-journal? Why?
-What sort of reactions do you have to e-journals as a genre?
-Would you ever be interested writing for an e-journal? Would you use one as a source for research for a class?
-How do e-journals compare to other methods/genres of electronic writing and publishing?
-What things do you think web design and methods other electronic writing and publishing could learn from e-journals? What could e-journals learn from other electronic writing and publishing genres/methods?
