If Tim Berners-Lee had decided to patent his idea in 1989, the Internet would be a different place. Instead, the World Wide Web became free to anyone who could make use of it. Many of those who did became rich: Jeff Bezos (Amazon.com), Jerry Yang (Yahoo), Pierre Omidyar (eBay) and Marc Andreessen (Netscape). But not Berners-Lee, 49, a British scientist working at a Geneva research lab at the time.

Title: Open source software compared to the fall of commuism

Bruce Sterling has an article in Wired, "Freedom's Dark Side: The iron fist, the invisible hand, and the battle for the soul of open source." in which he likens the open source movement to the fall of communism, hinting that the apparent chaos in eastern europe caused by the fall of totalitarian government may happen to software if bill gates and company lose. I may be wrong, but it seems to me like an at-least-the-trains-ran-ontime argument. (link)rn
