I'm a second-year Arts/Law student at Sydney University, participating in the Virtual Exchange Program as part of the English unit "Modern Rhetoric". My main areas of interest, so far as rhetorical theory is concerned, are the often spurious and superficial distinctions drawn between classic, Aristotlean rhetoric and modern rhetoric, the negative connotations that typically attach to rhetoric as a pejorative concept, and the "ethics" of rhetoric, especially in relation to ill-educated audiences (for example, the age-old question of whether noble philosophical ends justify less than scrupulous rhetorical means). I'm also very intrigued by the undiscovered functions of epideictic rhetoric (for example, George Kennedy's theory that "cultural values" can be imparted through the occasional address).
