Thomas Igeme -- Stanford

My name is Thomas Igeme, a second-year undergraduate at Stanford. I am ethnically Ugandan but I was born and grew up in Nairobi, Kenya. I suppose my father did a good job of stressing our roots because I identify as Ugandan nonetheless (and I am now a Ugandan citizen). I am the oldest of three children (two sisters whom I absolutely adore) in a pretty close-knit family. Growing up as “foreigners” in Kenya probably helps to account for why we are so close; I still barely speak Swahili and I definitely grew up with a sense that I was closer to my family than I could ever be to anyone else. I am definitely not an athlete – believe me, I have tried. Soccer, tennis, rugby…I am yet to find a sport I am not totally inept at. Still, I love group games – or group anything. I am what some people term a “social butterfly” – I am often not fully comfortable unless I am in a group of ‘friends’. Interestingly though, after a week of hanging out with friends over our Spring break I felt exhausted – maybe I’m less of an introvert than I assume?
